As you begin to nest and prepare for the arrival of your little one, here are some suggestions of what to bring along with you from a birth doula's perspective.

Whether you’re the one giving birth or the one supporting it, having a well-packed birth bag can make all the difference. As a doula, I’ve seen the comfort that simple items bring in those long, beautiful hours of labour.

Here’s a helpful guide for both doulas and families to make sure nothing important is left behind.

For the Doula

Essentials: Change of scrubs, cozy sweater, snacks, reusable water bottle, socks, kindle/book, iPad, Laptop, chargers, powerbank (charged lol)

Support Tools: Tens machine, Rebozo, birth comb, heated blanket, electric heating pad, massage oil, eye mask, bluetooth speaker, portable fan, essential oils, battery-powered candles.

Self-Care: Lip balm, hand lotion, blanket, eye mask, mints or gum, affirmation cards, crystals

For the Family

Birth Parent: ID, comfy clothes, nursing bra, slippers, toiletries, snacks, phone charger, reusable water bottle, snacks, electrolytes

Partner: Change of clothes, slippers, snacks, camera, blanket, pillow

Baby: Going-home outfit, blanket, hat, diapers, wipes, car seat installed.

Flat lay of hospital birth bag essentials for baby including nursing pillow, black duffel bag, fuzzy blanket, swaddle, knit picture outfit, burp cloth, two onesies, pacifiers, mittens, portable sound machine and egg night light

Birth unfolds in its own time, and a packed bag means one less thing to worry about. Whether you’re preparing to hold space as a doula or preparing to birth your baby, readiness creates calm and with calm there’s confidence.
